Impact A Village non-profit is bringing a speaker

November 12, 2008

A local non-profit is bringing a special speaker to the Sacramento area on Thursday night, November 13. You might be interested in going.

Deng Jongkuch is one of the Lost Boys of Sudan. In 1987, at the age of 5, Deng escaped from his village in Southern Sudan while it was under attack. He survived long walks to Kenya and Ethiopia and 14 years in refugee camps. In 2001 Deng was selected with 3,800 other boys to come to the US. He worked full time and went to school, graduating from San Jose State in 2008. Deng returned to his village in 2005 and was dismayed to see his village in poor condition, without a school or clean water. Deng is passionately committed to helping rebuild his village.

He is speaking at the Granite Bay High School from 7-8:30 pm. The purpose is to ask those attending to voluntarily donate to a local nonprofit that is trying to assist his village. The name of the nonprofit is Impact A Village. You can read more about it at www.impactavillage.org

The plan for the evening can be found at http://impactavillage.org/downloads/agenda_granite_bay_nov13_2008.pdf

Information on Granite Bay High School can be found at http://gbhs.rjuhsd.k12.ca.us/

Granite Bay High is at 1 Grizzly Way in Granite Bay. Take 80E to Douglas East. Turn right on Sierra College Blvd. Turn left on Eureka. You will see the school on the left in about 1/2 mile. The event is in the cafeteria which is near the front gate of the school near a Bear statue. Parking is available in the main parking lot.

Deng is from Bor County in Southern Sudan which is very, very rural with limited access and roads. It's not a tourist destination, but it'll be very moving to hear his personal experiences. The students at the high school are working to raise funds for this non-profit.
